The circus is in town...

...or as David Lynch might say: it's crazy clown time.

End

Mind your step, dawdlers - Inveresk may no longer be an industrial zone servicing Tasmania's rail infrastructure, but it still hosts a small restored tram which runs on weekends.

Reused

Ah, my favourite bit of Launceston: Inveresk (can you tell?). It's hard for me to imagine what this place was like, back when it was still a functioning industrial site - particularly when the trees are looking so green and leafy. It's a subject that's been done to death recently in art, but something really appeals to me about nature reclaiming a derelict industrial site.

Of course, in this case, it's nothing to do with nature doing it's thing - as is probably quite obvious, this is a nicely landscaped and deliberately planned reclamation where the grass and rusty rails are both integral. Full points to the people who made it happen.

(The coffee is also excellent from the local cafe, by the way...)

petals, fence

As spring arrives, the magnolias bloom before seemingly immediately dropping those gorgeous petals. I think this is why magnolias are so popular in the inner suburbs - the ephemeral nature of their blooming.

The Charles

Ahhh, The Charles. I was speaking to a work colleague, who worked in this building when it was still part of the local hospital complex. The views, she tells me, were excellent.

"now open"

more from the Kingsway mural. i'm not sure whether these doors are even useable any more, or even who they belong to.

lady

more from the Kingsway mural. whoever did this up certainly knew a thing or two about painting things on a wall.

personal note: i'll be in Tokyo for the next 10 days, so updates are on autopilot.

ironmongers

it's probably been a long time since there was an ironmongery on the corner of York & Charles, however you can't help but wonder at how important and lucrative this business was, considering they built themselves a fairly substantial building and stamped their name and profession all over it.

empty

i'm sure on a weekday, there'd be enough cars here to take the poignancy out of a rather optimistic ticket machine sign. if you charge for it, they will come...apparently.

the bakery mural

anyone who's driven through Newstead more than casually will be familiar with this mural on the side of a European-style bakery. it's definitely part of Launceston's cultural landscape - i remember it from when i first lived in Launceston in the 80s - however i have two points i'd like to bring up:

1) the guy on the left - presumably Bavarian, from the get-up - his face has always creeped me out slightly (qv. nose, cheekbones, chin)
2) the guy on the right - presumably the baker - looks an awful lot like the guy from the Curiosity Show

pet stop

there may be no puppy latte here, but it's nice to have a space to secure one's best friend on the way to the chemist, doctor, or Thai restaurant.

it's been a while - i recently changed jobs, so there's been a few other things occupying my time. i'll be posting as frequently as my now-settled schedule can handle.
