Dr Pugh

Any book entitled "Eminent Launcestonians" is bound to be a short read, but you can guarantee that Dr William Pugh would take up a chapter to himself.

I won't bore you with the details (ask the google for more), but suffice to say we have very few statues of locals around the city & nearby towns, and this guy has his own. If you're keen to get your photo taken with Dr Pugh, you can find him walking down the steps opposite the Nelumie building into Princes Square.

A park in the city

Formerly a rubbish pit, brickfields, and home to a gallows - it's been an interesting time for the block of land now known as Prince's Square. For the last 150 years or so, it's been one of Launceston's nicest - if under-appreciated - public spaces.

Princes Square Fountain (part 2)

More from the fountain in Princes Square. I understand that the absolute top feature of the fountain was removed before it was installed, on account of, er, public taste (I understand it featured some kind of nudity). Whether it's true or not, it's still a beautiful fountain and for many visitors it's one of Launceston's most unexpected features.

Princes Square fountain

I believe this Val d'Osne fountain was shipped out here from Paris to celebrate the anniversary of Launceston's municipal water system in 1858 (I think). It's quite pretty, more to come.
